MARKER GEEK MONDAYS

Marker Geek Monday: Copic Northern Lights Backgrounds

Hey everyone! Elaineabella here with a fun Marker Geek Monday post for you! This week we’re going to take a look at creating some fun background effects for some of our awesome Christmas/winter themed stamp sets.

The two backgrounds I’m sharing today are fairly similar. The first one is actually one I created a couple of years ago, but I think it’s still worth checking out if you want to have a go at recreating the look!

Copic Northern Lights Background #1:

Watch the video below or in HD over on YouTube.

To see a finished card, check out this blog post: Winter Sky Colouring Tutorial.

This example was looser in style and much quicker to do than the one in my latest video which you will see below. I kept the colours fairly light and they didn’t require much working and blending to achieve a nice soft look.

Copic Northern Lights Background #2:

Marker colours are given on the video, and the video also shows me colouring the snow and lake Santa is skating on.

This example took more time, as I was going for a darker sky, and more vibrant colours. The image was also a bit trickier to work around!

TOP TIP: when trying this yourself, start with the background and colour your stamped image afterwards! It’s easier to use the colourless blender to correct mistakes on an uncoloured image, or to cover mistakes with other colours.

I also took things a step further and used one of my favourite colourless blender techniques to add some extra interest to the sky, which also enhanced the northern lights effect and helped things to blend more, or rather distracts the eye from noticing imperfections! 😉 You can see me doing this in another background colouring tutorial: Copic Galaxy Background Tutorial (w/video & step by step guide).

To see a finished card and the step by step guide I created to go with the video, check out this blog post: Easy Copic Northern Lights Effect Background.

That’s it for now! I hope you’ve enjoyed checking out today’s post. Don’t forget to hop on over to my blog – Marker Geek – to see the finished cards for both videos and grab or pin the step by step guides for your reference!

  1. Thanks so much for sharing! I have this one bookmarked so I can refer to it closer to my Christmas card making! 🙂

I like the look of the Northern Lights but I don’t have those Copics so I couldn’t recreate it. I wonder if it would work with markers that aren’t Copics? I have plenty of other markers. Santa, if you’re listening, and I know that you are, I would like some Copics for Christmas please. I will send you my list of colors. I want to make this card!
