Struggling for ways to make those Christmas cards extra special? Sandiebella has your back! Follow her step by step guide today to create a Gatefold Shutter Card that is sure to wow the recipient.
Gatefold Card Base: Cut a 8 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ piece of card and score at 2 1/8″ and 6 3/8″. Fold in both sides in towards the center to create the gatefold card
Cut 2 pieces of white card measuring 3 1/2″ x 3 11/16″ for the shutter component. Score both on the long side at 3/8″. If you want the shutter to open more, score them at 0.5″
On the back of the shutter pieces, 3.5″ side, mark the centre on both ends (1.75″) and draw a pencil line from one to the other.
Measure from the end that isn’t scored, and put a pencil mark 2″ along the line.
Draw a pencil line from the 2″ mark, to each of the outer edges.
Use a scissors or paper trimmer to cut along the diagonal lines to make a fishtail. Repeat these steps on the other 3 1/2″ x 3 11/16″ piece to make 2 pieces the shutter.
Cut 2 pieces of patterned paper measuring 2″ x 5 3/8″ and adhere to the each side of the inside.
Apply adhesive to the 3/8″ section of the fishtail, and line it up at the scoreline as shown.
Fold in the 2 1/8″ section, adhering the fishtail to it.
Repeat on the other side, ensuring both pieces are lined up.
Cut a piece of white card measuring 3″ x 6″ and score at 0.25″ on each end of the 6″ side. Centre over the fishtails and line the scorelines up with the top and bottom of the card base. Place a 2 3/8″ circle die, centred over the fishtails and secure it with removable tape.
Stamp the Penguins Bearing Gifts onto white card and colour using your desired medium. Ensure to leave plenty of white space around the penguin that will be behind the shutter as single layer images work best with this type of mechanism.
Place the image behind the shutters and centre it before adhering it down.
Optional: Cover the fishtail pieces with patterned paper, using the fishtails as a template. Because the whole centre of them is hidden behind the front panel, it doesn’t have to be precise.
Adhere the paper to the centre panel and apply double sided tape to each of the 0.25″ ends.
Centre the panel over the image, remove the tape from the ends, fold them under and adhere them to the top and bottom – lining them up with the top and bottom edges .
Decorate the front of the card as desired.
To make the belly band, cut a strip of card measuring 2″ x 11″. Fold it around the card leaving some wiggle room. Apply adhesive to the inside of one end and the outside of the other end.
Remove the backing paper from the tape and fold in the ends.
Cut 2 pieces of contrasting paper at 1 7/8″ x 4 1/8″ and adhere them front and back of the belly band.
Retrieve the circle you cut earlier from the patterned paper and cut a white circle slightly larger.
Cut a pennant about an inch wide and curve the top of it using the smaller circle die.
Cut out another penguin using the coordinating die.
Adhere the penguin onto the circle using 3D foam tape.
Adhere the circles with the penguin onto the belly band,
Cut out the FALALA from dark paper or card.
Adhere the FALALA beneath the image on the inside.
Slide the belly band onto the card.
