Time to start the week off with Marker Geek Monday! For today’s post I put my Copic markers down and picked up my Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens to show you how easy it is to create fun backgrounds.
The technique below is perfect when you want to sit and play but aren’t sure what to do, or if you need to create something in a bit of a hurry. When I’m feeling like crafting, but I’m also not really getting much inspiration, I love sitting down and playing with inks/paints/etc. to create lots of fun background pieces that I can grab next time I’m making a card.
If you’d like to see previous posts on Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens, check towards the end of this post for the links.
I used a couple of the background pieces I created to create a simple yet effective card, which I can’t stop looking at!
Stamps Used: sentiment/word stamps from the Danielle Donaldson CreativeGirl onlyGretchen rubber stamp set.
I love the words that come with the Danielle Donaldson CreativeGirl stamps, I’m getting so much use out of them both with and without the girls!
Here’s how the background pieces came together.
Before starting I trimmed down some cold press watercolour paper to A6 size (10.5cm x 14.8cm or 4.13″ x 5.83″). This is slightly larger than the size I knew I would want for a card panel, as it allows for trimming off the edges where things are likely to be a little messy or splotchy.
I took my blue Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pen – 030 Blue – and started laying down some colour. Because I used a cold press watercolour paper the colour doesn’t glide on as easily as it does on a smooth paper. That’s okay!
I then added some 080 Violet.
Then some 082 Purple.
I continued for a while. It actually looks pretty cool as it is! If this had been on hot press watercolour paper with smoother colouring I would have been tempted to leave it.
I spritzed it with some water in a spray bottle and let the water work its magic! Adding too much water will simply result in all the colours running together and mixing – go slowly, you can always add a little more if you need to.
While waiting for the background to dry I decided to make use of the leftover colour on my craft mat – no need to let it go to waste!
I simply spritzed the mat with a little more water and also spritzed my paper a little so the colour would spread nicely, then dragged the paper through the colour.
Perfect!
I managed to get a few pieces out of the leftover colour on my mat. These can be used as the base for something else, for die cutting or as with the piece on my card above, for layering on a card front.
So pretty!
On this one, I used a little too much water! No problem, I can still use it for die cutting shapes or trim it down into some strips of colour.
This was so easy to do, and is a great creative jumpstart. Try it next time you’re feeling a little mojo-less. 😉

Thanks for the tip. Love the way they came out.
I love this idea! I have just ordered myself some of the zig clean color brush pens so can’t wait to try this out! Will be checking out your other posts for inspiration once the pens arrive. Thanks! x
I like what you did. I don’t have any of those Zig colored pens so I can’t do this technique but I wish I could because I love how it looks. Thanks for showing it to us.
Thanks for the tut brill!
What a neat idea! I will have to give this a try so I have some on hand when I need some paper for the background. Thanks for sharing! 🙂
